ALTERNATIVE HISTORIES
September 24 - November 24, 2010
Opening Friday, September 24, 7-9pm

NEW YORK – Alternative Histories is a history of New York City alternative art spaces and projects since the 1960s. Through audio interviews with founders and key staff, a reading room of magazines and publications, documentation, ephemera and narrative descriptions, the exhibition will tell the story of pioneering spaces – like P.S.1, Artists Space, Fashion Moda, Taller Boricua, ABC No Rio, The Kitchen, Franklin Furnace, Exit Art, 112 Greene Street/White Columns, Creative Time, Electronic Arts Intermix, Anthology Film Archives, Storefront for Art and Architecture, Just Above Midtown, and many more – as well as document a new generation of alternative projects such as Live With Animals, Fake Estate, Apartment Show, Pocket Utopia, Cleopatra’s, English Kills Art Gallery, Triple Candie, Esopus, and others.

Over 130 spaces are represented in the show, which elaborates on the significant contributions these organizations made to the cultural fabric of New York City. They gave visibility and inclusion to otherwise excluded artists and ideas. The idealism of the founders, the hard work and dedication of everyone involved in sustaining these histories, against all odds, illustrates the dynamic purposes that propel the artistic scene in New York. “Imagination is an alternative to reality, creating options that never end,” says curator Papo Colo.

The exhibition incorporates a broad definition of the term “alternative space,” and includes significant publications and artist collectives to cover a broad arc of this history – bridging neighborhoods, decades and themes. In the development and organization of this exhibition, the curatorial team viewed dozens of archives and personal collections – selecting critical materials from the histories of the spaces and projects – and interviewed founders and early staff members, when possible, to construct a narrative about the alternative space movement in New York and its continuing impact on the city’s cultural and artistic landscape.

NEW YORK – Trickster Theater, a New York-based theater company, announces the launch of Digitheater, a project dedicated to presenting and producing theatrical works exclusively for the web. Digitheater is theater not for a live audience, but for an international Internet community, using YouTube as a medium to create original theater. Trickster Theater on YouTube has already produced approximately ninety short dramatic segments, or cantos, each running approximately one to five minutes. New cantos can be accessed through the Trickster Theater channel on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/trickstertheater

In this online format, the camera focuses tightly on the actors’ face — their essential expressive tool — to give the actor immediacy as they interpret, often bilingually, the director’s narratives. Rather than using the web as a site solely for documentation, these online theater performances investigate the nature of the computer frame as a theatrical proscenium. This new approach rewrites formal conventions and, because of the accessibility of the Internet, creates a new cross-cultural platform for actors.

Digitheater uses a diverse cast of actors from around the world, each one bringing a unique cultural perspective and collectively representing the many voices of the modern city. The multi-lingual texts of the Trickster Theater incorporate Urdu, French, Spanish, Hebrew, Swedish, Greek and Japanese, among other languages. The actors explore the words as sounds and reference an internal Trickster notation system, which cues gesture and intonation. The inflection of the actor’s speech, the musicality of foreign accents, and the immersion into the sounds of other languages explore the rich possibilities of what can be heard when many different cultural bodies are brought together.

Since its inception, one of the most important aspects of the Trickster Theater is its role as a multilingual and multinational theater, creating a theater as global as its audience. The Trickster Theater has a history of bilingual productions, tackling the issue of translation in dramatic arts and reflecting the multi-lingual community of the Americas. Trickster Theater’s website contains a repository of select past performance works. Since 2002, Trickster Theater has been innovating online productions such as M Play, a bilingual web series telling the story of three women reflecting on life in the modern metropolis.

Digitheater videos utilize intimate compositions and a striking minimal aesthetic in order to evoke a wide variety of moods in the viewer. All texts will ultimately become part of live performance works, recombined each night in a different order, creating different meanings and contexts for ever-changing plays.

Digitheater currently encompasses three different projects – Venus Erotica, The Adventures of ZigZag and Change of Skin – and is expected to continue growing. The Venus Erotica series juxtaposes the erotic relationship between words and gestures. The Adventures of ZigZag introduces the viewer to the characters and actors of Zigzag and exists as an independent companion piece to the theatrical production. Videos establish the universe of ZigZag, creating a distinct mythology around the show prior to its live production. Change of Skin and I Want To Be A Painting will be the first of Trickster Theater’s live performances beginning in Winter 2010 and will explore the differences of race, gender, and language. These videos feature a diverse range of actors and languages spanning different cultures and continents.

Digitheater is an ongoing project. New series will be added over time, creating a diverse theater experience viewable from home on the internet. This virtual theater exists solely online, as theater produced for the individual, creating a web presence.

As Papo Colo says, “Every room is the center of the world.”

HISTORY
Trickster Theater was founded in 1998 by Papo Colo. An artist who has always worked in multiple mediums, Colo has been involved in theater since 1991 when he founded the First World Theater which presented Zygmunt and Stolen Kisses at The Cultural Space in 1992. In 1995 Colo produced Imaginary Beings, combining a theatrical and visual art exhibition about invented characters from Jorge Luis Borges’ text of the same name. In 1996 he produced Resonances, a play of simultaneous texts and overlapping narratives that took place on two stages concurrently and could be viewed from different perspectives. Since moving to its current location in Hell’s Kitchen, the Trickster Theater has produced a diverse range of shows such as Praying Project, Water Project, Wild Nights, Tropical Area, Cannon Dialogues, Confessions of the Face, Somehow, and Still Life available as DVDs on the <a href="http://www.exitart.org/site/pub/exit_m
Since 1984, Colo has been the Co-founder and Artistic Director of Exit Art, a multi-disciplinary cultural space located in Hell’s Kitchen. At Exit Art he integrated performance and theater with the visual arts in projects such as Terra Bomba (1997) and Let the Artist Live (1995). The theater, performance and visual arts awards he has received are: Franklin Furnace Fund Award for Performance Art (1987); Guggenheim Award in Painting (1991), Bessie Award (1995) for his innovative conception of the Exit Art project Let the Artist Live; an Individual Artist Grant in Theater from the New York State Council on the Arts (2001); awards from the National Endowment for the Arts in the Visual Arts (1981, 1983); and a New York Foundation for the Arts award in Painting (1991), among others.

THE END OF OIL
June 13 – July 31, 2009
Opening: Saturday, June 13, 6-8pm
Exit Underground

NEW YORK – A project of SEA (Social-Environmental Aesthetics), The End of Oil is an exhibition of photography, prints, videos, installations and new media that addresses human dependence on oil and other fossil fuels; the ramifications that this dependency has on the future of the environment and of global geopolitics; and the recent push towards viable alternative energy resources.

In July 2008, the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Companies (OPEC) announced that the price per barrel of oil had climbed above $130. About five months later, in December 2008, the New York Times reported that oil had fallen below $40 a barrel, less than a third of the July 2008 price. In the first six months of 2009, oil prices seem to have steadied around $55 a barrel. These fluctuating oil prices are evidence of the instability of global oil markets and reminders of our urgent need to develop alternative fuels and forms of energy.

The works in this exhibition draw attention to and investigate the violent conflicts (such as in Nigeria, Burma and Sudan) and negative environmental effects that result from mining and drilling; the politicization of the oil industry; carbon-footprinting; and renewable energy options, such as vegetable and electric-powered cars, geothermal energy, and solar power. The End of Oil does not prophesize a dystopian future, but looks critically at the way in which we use and generate energy, encouraging a dialogue on this issue for the benefit of future generations.

SEA and The End of Oil conceived by Papo Colo.
SEA is a unique endeavor that presents a diverse multimedia exhibition program and permanent archive of artworks that address social and environmental concerns. SEA will assemble artists, activists, scientists and scholars to address environmental issues through presentations of visual art, performances, panels and lecture series that will communicate international activities concerning environmental and social activism. SEA will occupy a permanent space in Exit Underground, a 3000 square-foot, multi-media performance, film and exhibition venue underneath Exit Art’s main gallery space. The SEA archive will be a permanent archive of information, images and videos that will be a continuous source for upcoming exhibitions and projects. Central to SEA’s mission is to provide a vehicle through which the public can be made aware of socially- and environmentally-engaged work, and to provide a forum for collaboration between artist
s, scientists, activists, scholars and the public. SEA functions as an initiative where individuals can join together in dialogue about issues that affect our daily lives.

CONCEPTPLUS
Exit Art currently works with a curatorial model called ConceptPlus, which begins with a theme or concept that is then publicized through a call for proposals.

For each ConceptPlus idea, the curators first chose a group of artists that form the base of the exhibition. Then Exit Art issues an international call for artists to propose new or newly-contextualized work in response to a given theme or cultural condition. The exhibition is then curated by Exit Art’s curatorial staff, who view all the proposals for new work and work samples submitted by artists and select projects to be presented and/or commissioned for the exhibition. Every artist who submits a proposal has equal access to the curators, regardless of their previous experience, making ConceptPlus a highly democratic curatorial model. Recent ConceptPlus exhibitions at Exit Art have addressed ideas ranging from the reconstruction of global cities (Exit Biennial: Reconstruction, 2003) to the image of America's highest office (The Presidency, 2004), to contemporary Latino icons (L-Factor, 2005) to neuroscience innovations (BrainWave: Common Senses, 2008). A fundamental precept of the ConceptPlus model is to remove barriers to cultural participation by creating exhibition opportunities limited only by the artistic idea itself. As we have implemented this model over the past five years, Exit Art has seen a dramatic rise in both the number and geographic diversity of artists submitting proposals in response to our open calls. ConceptPlus also enables us to directly support the production of new work, as an increasing proportion of artists propose new projects that are commissioned exclusively for Exit Art exhibitions.

        May 20 – July 25, 2009
Opening: Wednesday May 20, 7-10pm

NEW YORK – Négritude, an experimental multi-disciplinary exhibition at Exit Art, explores the visionary 20th century political and artistic movement of the same name — coined by the Martinican poet, playwright, and politician Aimé Césaire in the 1930s — which flourished among Black intellectuals in post-World War I Paris and later spread to Africa, the United States and the Caribbean.

This exhibition seeks to define Négritude as an “archipelago”, with many “islands”, or perspectives. Négritude is an idea that developed in distinct ways in different countries due, in part, to language, culture, and the political climate. Exit Art — to reflect this diversity and to offer varying perspectives — invited four other individuals to organize this project in collaboration.

Négritude includes different “islands” created and produced by five individuals who are curators, cultural critics, scholars, filmmakers and artists, representing African-American, African, Caribbean and South American cultures. Over the course of several months, these individuals met to share their ideas and develop their “islands.” Each person was asked to curate their “island” of Négritude by presenting an exhibition of visual art; film screenings; music; performances; and/or public activities that detail their own experience, interest, or study of Négritude.

Négritude was a celebration of shared black heritage and an affirmation and valorization of pan-African identity and was a direct response to the effects of the African slave trade, French colonization of West Africa, and the New World plantation system. The beginnings of the Afro-Caribbean movement can be traced to literary movements in Puerto Rico and Cuba through the writing of Puerto Rican poet Luis Pales Matos, whose poem “Black Town” was published in 1927, and the Cuban Nicolas Guillen, although Cesaire's version of Négritude would eventually eclipse them. Under the influence of Césaire, the Guianan Léon Damas, and Léopold Sédar Senghor, the future president of Senegal, Négritude became a global movement, ultimately becoming radicalized and re-envisioned as a strict rejection of the domination of “the West”.

Showcasing several generations of African-American, Caribbean, South American and African artists, performers and writers, Négritude features work that examines the history, impact, and transmutations of this cultural movement. It looks beyond the historical Négritude movement to investigate also the emergence of the Harlem Renaissance and Modernism in the 1920s and 30s and contemporary responses to the concept of “blackness, highlighting the post-Civil Rights generation of black artists who have new perspectives on racial identity and politics.

Through a series of mini-exhibitions, film screenings, performances, readings, stories and discussions, Exit Art will examine the historical effects and contemporary impact of Négritude by exploring its archipelago, island by island.

Conceived by Papo Colo. Produced by Papo Colo, Tânia Cypriano, Rose Réjouis, Franklin Sirmans, and Greg Tate.

HIGHLIGHTS
Papo Colo’s “island” uses live cotton and sugar plants to reference two of the earliest slave-grown commodities in the Americas, and will involve the participation of students in the process of creating his installation. Stacks of paper, printed with the images of Négritude icons such as Malcolm X, Pelé and President Barack Obama, will be included on the “island.” In partnership with New York area schools, students will be invited to choose their “favorite” icon and fold his or her image into a paper airplane or boat that will be placed in the installation with the artist’s intervention.

Tânia Cypriano explores Afro-Brazilian culture through a ten-week screening series that touches on topics from capoeira to samba, Quilombos to religion, racism in soap operas to the globalization theories of philosopher Milton Santos. Her exhibition features works by renowned photographer Mario Cravo Neto – a resident of Bahia, Brazil and a follower of Candomblé, an Afro-Brazilian religion – among other works.

Rose Réjouis argues that Négritude, as Aimé Césaire envisioned it, was a form of “dark play” (to use a term by Richard Schechner). Relying on the safety net of literary French, the language in which he wrote his poetry, Césaire recycled negative stereotypes of black people while recovering new ground for self-affirmation. Réjouis explores this notion through her exhibition, which includes artists Wura-Natasha Ogunji and Haitian-American artist Vladimir Cybil Charlier-Juste, and performances by African-Hungarian music group Dallam-Dougou and poet Saul Williams.

Greg Tate presents a three-room “Black Mystery Anti-Panopticon,” envisioning Négritude as a “place” for mystery and funk, music and soul. A DJ shrine, created by Tate and the artists Xaviera Simmons and Arthur Jafa, will provide a site for weekly performances; a raised stage outfitted with a drum kit, microphones, and amps will be used for occasional live music; and an exhibition of visionary black artists – including Thornton Dial, Jr., Thornton Dial, Sr., and Lonnie Holley – coupled with laminated pages from the books Souls Grown Deep: African American Vernacular Art, Vols. 1 and 2, will create a “conjuration room where willing spirits can come to get toasted, roasted, and lit the fuck up.”
